Logarithms climb fast at first and then flatten out — exactly the shape of a dog's life. A handy side effect: every time your dog's age doubles (1 to 2, 2 to 4, 4 to 8), the human estimate climbs by the same 11 years or so. The old rule is just age × 7, a straight line that starts far too low and ends far too high. Both results are rounded to the nearest whole year.

Why 16 × ln(age) + 31 beats "just multiply by 7"

The times-7 rule makes one quiet assumption: that a dog moves through life at a single steady speed, ticking off the same 7 human years every trip around the sun. It's tidy, it's easy to do in your head at the park, and it falls apart the moment you meet an actual 1-year-old dog — a full-grown athlete with adult teeth, not a second grader.

The curve that emerged is logarithmic — 16 × ln(dog years) + 31 — which is a formal way of saying dogs age extremely fast early on, then ease off.

The first year is a sprint

By the methylation clocks, a 1-year-old dog sits near 31 human years — molecularly a young adult, which squares with what your eyes already told you. By age 4 the estimate reaches about 53; after that, each birthday adds fewer human years than the one before. The straight 7× line starts far too low, catches up through the middle years — the two formulas briefly agree in a dog's tenth year — then overshoots into triple digits for the oldest dogs.
